I remember reading about ancient beliefs long ago, and there was a story about how human lives are woven into a tapestry by some celestial weaver, three sisters I think, I think it was the Greeks who believed this. Of course i don’t believe in the story but itis not hard to see how they could have come up with such a belief. In the last month of so, i have been coming across several of my old friends, some quite by accident. The first was Wafa, the girl from the next housing area. We used to go to our separate schools on the same bus. She later went into show business and now she’s some sort of business woman. Her younger sister works at the faculty, which was how I was able to get in touch with her. Her younger sister is the assistant of my former university classmate who was recently made the head of the foreign language department.
Then I met Hameed, an old classmate from High school. He recently registered with the faculty to do his masters. I have seen him quite often lately mainly because the graduate room is just down stairs from my office.
Yesterday, as I was shaking hands with my fellow congregationists after Terawih prayers, I ran into Hamdan, another friend from high school days. It turned out that he is one of the committee members of the the new mosque I now go to for terawih prayers in Ramadan. I am beginning to wonder who I will run into next.
I guess experiences like these are the kind of experiences that made the Greeks believe in the tapestry story. Unfortunately when you are but a thread, it is hard for you to see the whole tapestry. Except what you can glimpse backwards, or downwards from your position in the tapestry.
