Can you feel it?

Can you feel it?
There is something in the air that we breathe,
Hiding behind every aroma we smell,
An undetected nuance beneath the zesty fruit, the flowery sweetness, a stinking swell.
Hiding like a shadow in darkness resolute.

You see it only in fleeting glances,
The shooting pain at the back of your head.
Inside your skull.
A flash of anxiety without reason not rhyme.
A throbbing dull.
Like when the massive bell rings a silent chime.

Can you feel its cold grip around your heart?
Squeezing slowly inexorably undeniably
Can you feel its breath on the back of your neck?
A cold draft that makes your skin crawl.
It digs into your senses like an awl.
Can you feel its eyes on you?
Following your every move?
Observing your face, every crease and every groove.
It is coming. Its presence will be known. Its form shall be shown.
You know it. You feel it. We all do and it is driving us mad.
It is making our days go faster.
It makes people just that much crazier.
It makes our defiance pathetic and sad.
It is coming!
It is coming!
Be patient, My friend. I won’t be long now.
