Not so far from the Staples center
When I came home from work the other day, Ain related a curious tale to me. It is about what happened when her aunt, Chu. Chu went for some kueh a few mornings ago. By the way, people often translate kueh as cakes but lets face it, they don’t actually mean the same thing , do they. Cake simply does not carry the same semantic load as kueh. Anyway, back to Chu’s trip to Batu Gajah town in Perak for some kueh.
Chu thought that the lady selling the kueh looked rather haggard and tired. concerned, Chu asked if the lady was alright, expecting the lady to tell her about family problems, possibly children misbehaving or husband issues. Instead, the lady said she has not been able to sleep and she has been worrying about Michael Jackson. She heard that he ay have converted to Islam. If he had, she was worried if he did not get a proper Muslim burial. This lady in Batu Gajah, Perak was losing sleep over the King of Pop’s immortal soul and earthly remains.
She was not able to go to the Staples Center but she was probably as distressed about it as anyone there. Such is the power of the media: the might of Globalization. Regardless of the negative side of this phenomena; here was a person losing sleep over what was happening to another human being half a world away. This can only be good.
Happy Birthday, Chu.
