I’m taking my two girls to a Pesta Tang Lung (lantern festival) gathering tonight. Its good to see that some things are still shared. When I was a kid I went out with the neighbor’s kids at night during the festival, with our lanterns. Our lanterns weren’t like those they have today with the battery powered light in them, ours had candles. My candle came loose and soon my lantern became a torch and I stood holding the handle delighted because mine was the brightest but then I was only seven at the time. Okay, I knew it was on fire but I was in no danger, my handle was long enough to keep me safe but I enjoyed the flames, perhaps there is a bit of pyromaniac in me after all.

I wrote a column in the New Straits Times, called "Voices in my Head". When the editor asked why that title, I told him that it was from a lecture on psychological illnesses. Everybody has voices in their heads. The problem is not the presence of the voices but the power they have over you. Most people only debate what they want to have for lunch with these voices. Some ... well. I'm sure you watch TV too.
